How many Institutes are training the Emergency Medicine in Pakistan?
By the mid of 2019 there are 11 program in Pakistan which provide training in Emergency Medicine.
What is the pathway for the Emergency Medicine specialization in Pakistan?
The road to EM specialization is either MS/MD in EM or FCPS in EM.
The College of Physicians and Surgeon Pakistan has accredited 11 institutions so far to run the EM training program. Physicians after MBBS and house need to appear in FCPS Part I exam in any basic clinical subject(Medicine, Surgery or Anesthesia) and apply for the seats in respective Institutions. Each institution has its own policy regarding induction of trainees and they induct the trainees either annually or twice a year in January and July. After the Institution induction the institution applies for the RTMC number and the training time starts. After finishing 5 years of training, the physician has to submit a dissertation and then finally into FCPS Part II exam.
How long is the Training in EM?
There are two types of programs in Emergency Medicine:
The MS in EM is a 4 year program run through local universities.
CPSP(College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan) accredited 5 years program in Emergency Medicine. The program is run through local institutions who are accredited by the CPSP for the training.
How many physicians have completed the training in Emergency Medicine?
Through CPSP there are about 9 physicians who are FCPS in EM by now in 2019. The number of MS in EM is not entirely known at this time, although there are two programs running the training.
