Shifa International Hospital

SIH is the pioneer when it comes to emergency medicine. Shifa Emergency was a very small 4-6 bedded area where medical officers used to provide cover round the clock. In 2009, hospital had the expansion and as the result new location for the emergency department was allocated. This new location created a twenty plus bedded emergency. It was still considered a place for new consultants to be introduced to Shifa and later on they would be transitioned to internal Medicine.
In 2009, two consultants started working in emergency room and soon after a collaboration was made with AKUH. This collaboration and resultant struggle to establish emergency medicine in Pakistan led Shifa to become the first program to apply for the training of EM and second program to get the approval through CPSP.
Dr. Abdus Salam Khan (ASK) was the founder Program Director and Supervisor of training in Emergency Medicine. He was soon joined by another consultant who was UK trained and worked there in emergency Medicine. Dr. Khawaja Junaid Mustafa joined in 2012 and soon the first batch of PG students were taken. Out of five PG joined at that time, four left the program in six month. But the subsequent batches were retained in Program.
College of Physician and Surgeons started a program for training emergency medicine residents in Ireland and later-on in UK and our PG students participated. Our PG students now are about 24 number and almost similar number working in UK and Ireland (LIST).
The Emergency Department of Shifa Hospital is among our best departments of the hospital which makes the hospital stand out for its quality and safe care.
