Shifa International Hospital conducted a series of capacity building workshops for the medical staff of Gilgit Baltistan province. I am involved in teaching physicians and was very happy to be part of this activity.
Education and updating knowledge is a very essential part of post graduate life for a physician. Medical knowledge has never been static and is gets updated continuously. What was once the mainstay of treatment becomes obsolete and similarly new treatment regimens are added. It puts great responsibility on the physicians to be up to date. In order for the physicians to provide quality patient care, they should have update knowledge, great skills and nice attitude. This capacity building workshop was sponsored by the Government of GB and also a Non- Governmental organization. This was a great chance for us to transfer knowledge to those people who provide care to common man in less than optimal situation. The group of doctors who came to attend this workshop was very enthusiastic and motivated. They took this workshop very seriously and tried learning as much as they could. We had selected topics for them which were broadly covering the medical management and also covering emergency management. Our idea was to brush up their knowledge and also introduce them to latest development in the field of medicine. Our management points stressed those things which could be done easily in most of the hospitals of Pakistan.
Our country lacks understanding regarding emergency medicine at all levels. We have not spent money to improve the care of most sick patients. As a physician we all have the responsibility to think about the situation and work together to improve it. Regular teaching, attending workshops and similar activities are the ways to improve the knowledge and enhance the skill.
Shifa International Hospital has to be congratulated for its leadership in working to improve the caliber. This kind of activity needs to be conducted regularly and in organized form, so that the overall level of care should be enhanced.
