Role of Mentor in Your Life

Amna Abbasi, Emergency Department

There are many paths towards a destination, some are long and difficult to travel while some are short and easy. Same is the case in life, there are many paths to travel and the person who guides you the right path is called a Mentor.

A true mentor is one who  explores the hidden potential of a person which even the person himself/herself doesn’t know. He not only concentrates on your career goals but also lets you know how to spend life in a gentle way.

Life has taught me; everybody needs somebody to follow. Nobody can successfully exist in isolation. In life; you need a mentor, a teacher or a guide who inspires you to your desired destination.

Mentorship is a God gifted ability and blessed are those who have this ability. Many people can be a mentor but few have the right combination of all element a mentor should have. A mentor can change the lives of many people by showing them the right direction. They not only give training and career counseling but also serve their precious time and energies.

Good mentors can take you  that last mile to your destination. They can show you how to build and navigate relationships, they can share

with you the mentality it takes to succeed and they can explain how things work. This is the kind of knowledge that only comes from experience.

It is not possible to satisfy everyone but it is possible to make a difference by showing some extra strength like focusing not only on a career of a person but also guiding him about behavior, values, and self-worth.

When I reflect on my career, I can see that I have been benefited from the counsel of many important informal and formal mentors who have provided meaningful insights that have helped me  look at opportunities and obstacles from a different perspective.

I realized that if we add a few things in our life as a mentee or a mentor no one can stop us to be successful.

Mutual accountability between mentor and a mentee has significant importance. Trust and accountability are the foundations of any successful mentoring relationship. Trust can help promote clear communication and preclude misunderstandings. You and your mentor must develop trust.

Hold your mentee accountable to set goals. By the same time, make sure you are practicing what you teach or preach.

Most mentors are amazing problem solvers. But great mentors empower their mentees to find their solution to a problem or challenge.

Sometimes, the journey is more important than the result. As a mentor make sure your ideas, decision is non-biased. This will encourage your mentee to freely approach you without any fear of being rejected.

Appreciation is a human need in any field of life . Always appreciate your mentee. Acknowledging somebody causes them to feel great about what they do. It causes them to feel better about themselves, asking them to go on with new power, will definitely fortify your relationship.

Your mentee always needs your feedback, give him the feedback. At the point when you give input, it is imperative to recognize the mentee’s achievements alongside with the area in which he or she needs improvements. It will help him to discover his talents and potential strength.

As a mentee you need to be honest that what you feel you can accomplish and what you are not comfortable with. This allows your mentor to make a right direction for you. You need to be self-initiated, suggest ways that you are ready to be pushed even further.

To conclude this, I must state that some people forget their mentor after achieving goals. For a minute, put yourself in his shoe and feel the agony of a mentor at that stage. The one who have accepted you as a mentee when you were nothing. For me no one is more unfortunate than the person who forgets the efforts and sincerity of his Mentos.

I do understand that difference of opinion exists everywhere but remember, never take you mentors for granted. It is such an incredible privilege to have a true mentor,  So  always respect and honor your mentor.
